Man Utd icon Rooney performed golf with Donald Trump as snipers watched the pair

Wayne Rooney’s golf game with former US President Donald Trump turned into a surreal experience, complete with snipers and an entourage of security.

The footie ace, 38, who has recently taken the reins at Plymouth Argyle, found himself under the watchful eyes of sharpshooters as he played 18 holes alongside the controversial political figure.

The bizarre pairing happened while Rooney was living it up in Washington DC, having taken his talents across the pond in 2018 to play for DC United. During his American adventure, Rooney, who left Everton for the second time, banged in 23 goals in 48 games for the MLS side.

Joining the duo on the green was none other than former New York Mayor Rudi Guiliani.

This star-studded round of golf gave Rooney quite the story to share with Gary Neville on The Overlap, powered by Sky Bet: “Donald Trump. The maddest thing about it was we had [Rudi] Guiliani in the buggy behind us, then there were about 50-100 golf buggies that were all security.”

“There was a boat in the lake with snipers, there were snipers in the bushes, and I was like ‘what’s going on here?”

Rooney’s chance to tee off with the ex-Apprentice star and business mogul came through a connection with Trump’s son and even scored him a trip to the Oval Office, reports the Mirror.

Rooney narrated: “I went in, he asked me to give his son football lessons. He said ‘do you want to see my dad?’ Took me into the oval office. From there his PA just texted, ‘do you want to play golf?”

On another topic, Rooney announced his pick in the ongoing debate of who between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest player of all time. Favouritism for his ex-team-mate did not sway his choice.

He declared: “I think Messi, I think he’s the best ever. I get a lot of stick for saying Messi.

I understand people can say Messi or Ronaldo, they’re both incredible, probably the best two players to play the game. For me, Messi has just got that little bit more flair which I like in a player.
