Ex-Man City flop who was in comparison with Cruyff to star in Conference League remaining

Manchester City flop Stevan Jovetic has a chance to claim European success with Olympiacos in the Europa Conference League over ten years since a disastrous switch to England.

Jovetic burst onto the scene as an exciting attacking midfielder at Serie A club Fiorentina after La Viola snapped him up from Serbian club Partizan Belgrade where he had become the youngest captain in the club’s history.

Following back-to-back double-figure goal seasons for Fiorentina, Jovetic was snapped up by City in 2013 for £22million and looked destined for stardom having been compared to Ajax and Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff by the Montenegro FA president Dejan Savicevic.

However, he failed to live up to the billing at the Etihad, scoring 11 times in 44 games in all competitions across two seasons. Despite City winning the Premier League and Carabao Cup, he was left out of the side by Manuel Pellegrini and shipped on loan to Inter Milan in 2015.

But the 34-year-old has the chance to lift his first trophy since the his 2013/14 Premier League success as he’s set to feature for Greek side Olympiacos in the Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina on Wednesday (May 29).

Jovetic has played 33 times so far in his debut campaign with the Greek giants – scoring eight times.

The Montenegrin was an unused substitute in both legs of the semi-final win against Aston Villa but could feature, likely off the bench, with the competition’s top scorer Ayoub El Kaabi set to lead the line again.

The 76-time Montenegro international joined Olympiacos following two years at Hertha Berlin, leaving after they were relegated from the Bundesliga last summer.

He previously attempted to reignite his career at Monaco in 2017 following a failed loan spell at Sevilla attempting to escape his Inter Milan misery, but he hit double figures in all competitions just once in four years.

Needless to say, Jovetic hasn’t come close to his early comparisons to the three-time European Cup and Ballon d’Or winning Dutchman, Cruyff.
