‘My spouse is leaving me due to what I did to my stepson’s hellhound canine’

A family has been grappling with a serious pet dilemma – and it’s escalated to such an extent the dad alleged his wife is contemplating divorce.

The man detailed in a Reddit post he tied the knot with his wife three years ago, and they each have a child from previous relationships. When his wife moved in, her 16-year-old son, who expressed a desire to get his own dog, came along.

The bloke – who already owns two “small dogs” – consented, assuming the boy would opt for another “smaller breed dog” given their already cramped living quarters and modest-sized garden.

However, when the boy returned home with a dog that “towered” over the other two pets, the man took decisive action – forbidding the teen from allowing his pet indoors.

He said: “He goes out and gets a dog that, at three months old, already towers over my two dogs. The dog is nothing but trouble. He chews up anything and everything he can get his jaws on. He gnawed a chunk out of my coffee table, and destroyed my £700 rug… it just never ended.

“I was very upset by all of this and even more upset when I caught her son setting his phone up to record me when he left the house to make sure I wasn’t mean to his hellhound.

“He would also take it upon himself to review all footage on my outdoor security system – my wife never said s**t to him about any of it. I finally had enough and told them that the dog was no longer allowed in the house.”

The bloke’s stepson was absolutely livid and decided to pack his bags and leave the family home. Not only did he move out, but he also got himself another pooch of the same breed.

Now, whenever he pops over to see his mum, he won’t step foot inside because his furry mates are barred.

The ongoing scraps over the mutt have caused a divide between the man and his missus, and now she’s on the brink of walking out.

He added: “Now, after years of arguing about this, it has driven me insane and I yelled at my wife… now, that is framed as the reason for our difficulties. She is getting ready to move out as I type this.”

Commenters on the post said the man wasn’t necessarily wrong for setting ground rules about the dog, but he should have spoken to his stepson about what breed he was going to get beforehand.

One person said: “What’s bizarre is people can marry but not communicate. When asked if he could get a dog, nothing else was discussed? You never had more conversations on the son’s behaviour and his dog?”

Another added: “I think there are things you could’ve done at the inception of the situation. But now, if you haven’t sat down and talked it out by this point, just help her move out.”
