Newcastle followers need testimonial for star who performed 5 Prem video games this season

Newcastle United want Paul Dummett to be given a testimonial following his release despite playing just 12 games in three seasons and only five times in the Premier League this season.

The 32-year-old is a boyhood Magpies fan and he joined the club’s youth ranks as a child but after 213 appearances and four goals in all competitions since making his senior debut in 2013, he will leave St James Park at the end of his contract next month.

Newcastle announced on Wednesday (May 29) that Dummett will be leaving the club upon the expiration of his contract this summer alongside Matt Ritchie, Loris Karius, Jeff Hendrick and Kell Watts.

The five-time Wales international has secured cult hero status at Newcastle thanks to his affiliation with the fans as a local boy and thanks to his form when Newcastle won the Championship title in 2017 and subsequent return to the Premier League.

Geordies on Twitter began reacting to the news of the versatile defender’s imminent exit, as they all rallied for him to be awarded a testimonial by the club following 11 years of service. One comment read: “Dummett testimonial needed, legend.”

Newcastle fans – do you think Paul Dummett should receive a testimonial? Let us know in the comments section.

A second pleaded: “Need Paul Dummett testimonial”, a third questioned: “Surely Dummett should be getting a Testimonial?!” Though a fourth fan argued: “Yeah Dummett was a long standing servant but he was also bang average. He doesn’t need a testimonial or anything like that!”

Since the start of the 2021/22 season, Dummett has featured just 12 times in all competitions, making only three appearances in that first season due to injury problems and falling behind incoming left-back Matt Targett.

The following campaign saw Dummett make just one EFL Cup appearance in the second round against Tranmere Rovers, before he started both of Newcastle’s EFL Cup wins against Manchester City and Manchester United this season.

He played one minute off the bench against Sunderland in the FA Cup third round and made just five very late substitute appearances in the league in his last season in black and white.
