Tyson Fury’s ex-trainer and uncle, Peter Fury, has taken a swipe at the Gypsy King’s dad, John, for his role during the defeat to Oleksandr Usyk.
John was part of Fury’s training team alongside SugarHill Steward and Andy Lee in Saudi Arabia. The former bare-knuckle boxer has faced backlash for often being the most vocal person in the corner and for telling Fury he was ahead in the 12th round during the Middle Eastern clash.
Despite Tyson and his promoter Frank Warren both claiming they believed the Morecambe-based boxer would emerge from the Middle East as the sport’s first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis, many outside the Fury camp thought Usyk won the fight with room to spare. Peter commended Tyson for delivering a top-notch fight that will be remembered for years to come. However, he didn’t mince words when it came to his brother John.

“Some can be too emotional in the corner, someone is giving the wrong advice ‘You’re winning it’,” Peter told October Red, reports the Express. “I think the only one who spoke a little bit of sense in that corner, in the last dying stretch of it, I’m not criticising the rest of them, was Sugar Hill.
“He said: ‘Put it on him’. I’m sure I heard that. ‘Go forward, stop crossing your legs, set on your shots’. I think that was the best advice out of all of it.
“For me there was just too many people, but maybe Tyson wants that, I don’t know. It’s been years since he dealt with me. I don’t know what the situation is, but clearly, for me, the game plan was wrong and there were too many people in the corner.

“Whichever of them one, two or three, only one of them should have been doing the speaking. Whichever one it was, just one. not three or four, because, how can you listen to that?”
Despite a nail-biting fight, Usyk emerged victorious by a split decision, with scorecards reading 115-112 and 114-113 in his favour, while one judge saw Fury as the winner at 114-113. A more forceful performance in the final rounds or a knockdown might have swung the result for Fury.
Reflecting on what he would’ve advised Tyson if he had been ringside, Peter revealed: “My advice would have been, ‘I don’t care if you have got one leg and you’re dying in the corner, get in there, you are down and you’re losing this fight. Get in there and go out on your back, put it on him’. That’s what should have happened in the corner.”
With a rematch slated for December 21, Peter believes Tyson must ramp up the aggression to overturn his sole career defeat.
“For me he was a big man who never used his tools and I thought there was a lot wrong with it,” Fury added. “I think they got the tactics wrong, I think the game plan was all wrong and that’s what I think of it.
“Still, it was a good fight to watch. They’ve both done well, exceptionally well, regarding the last couple of rounds, I could see what people could see, but did Tyson have enough in his tank to come out and give an avalanche of shots or was he so tired he was getting through it?”
