A ‘terrifying’ and unusual fish has been discovered washed up on the shore of a Singapore beach.

The animal was found lurking in the sand, completely still, looking up toward the sky. While disturbing, Dennis Chan found the uncommon sighting fascinating.

Taking to Instagram, he shared a clip of the bizarre animal in action, racking up 1.2m views and over one million likes. But people have been left utterly terrified.

Dennis, who made the discovery, explained: ‘An uncommon and fascinating sight, these quirky fish bury themselves in the sand with only their heads exposed, seemingly gazing at the stars while waiting for unsuspecting prey.

‘They are similar to stonefishes and scorpionfishes, which means they also possess venomous spines that can deliver painful stings.’

In the video, Dennis shows a close-up of the fish, known as a longnosed stargazer.

As he films it from different angles, it appears to be fixated on the sky above.

Suddenly, the fish can be seen gasping for air as it buries itself back into the deep sand.

It’s estimated that there are over 50 species of the fish and some come armed with an organ that produces electricity.

However, social media users were left feeling uneasy at the sight of the unusual creature – with some claiming it’s instilled a new phobia in them.

One Instagram user said: ‘This is now my sleep paralysis demon…never going in water…again.’

A second added ‘Unfind it,’ meanwhile a third quipped: ‘New fear unlocked.’

‘And people make fun of me for having a fish phobia. Look at that thing He’s scary as hell,’ said another user.

Others added: ‘Pretty terrifying’ and ‘I know it’s real, but it looks fake,’ one user commented.

‘I would die if I was walking in the water stepped on that, looked down and saw that. Like, literally pass away,’ penned another.

Meanwhile, someone else wrote: ‘I’ve never despised an animal before this one’.

Others chimed in with: ‘Absolutely petrifying’ and ‘I’d cry if I saw this’.

The longnosed stargazer is sometimes spotted on the Northern shores of Singapore, usually buried in the sand with only their faces or eyeballs peeking out.

According to Wild Singapore, the fish only emerge from hiding at night and they lure prey towards them with a filament in their mouths.
