Gazza’s ‘sensible’ reply as to whether Sir Alex may’ve managed him at Man Utd

Fans have hailed Paul Gascoigne’s ‘brilliant’ response when asked if Sir Alex Ferguson could have controlled him at Manchester United.

Gascoigne, 57, is almost as famous for his off-the-field antics as he is for his brilliance on the pitch. And after wowing week-in-week-out for Newcastle, Gazza was linked with a move to Sir Alex’s Red Devils, but infamously turned them down.

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, the Geordie-native was asked if he would fit in a United and whether the legendary manager could have curbed his antics and got the best out of his talents. He joked: “People always say would I have been different if I signed for United, would he [Sir Alex] have kept us under control?

“Well, Eric Cantona two-footed somebody in the neck in the stand, Wayne Rooney went with a granny, and Ryan Giggs went with his brother’s wife – so I might have fitted in.”

Welsh wing wizard Giggs had an affair with his brother Rhodri’s wife, Natasha, when she was still wed to his sibling. Their betrayal came to light in 2011, when Natasha revealed she had been having an affair with the United icon – which started in 2003.

Iconic forward Cantona infamously kung-fu kicked Crystal Palace fan Richard Shaw. Title-chasing United had been in a tense clash at Selhurst Park.

The Frenchman had been sent off and went to make his way down the tunnel, when he was taunted by the Palace fan with racist and xenophobic abuse. Cantona launched himself into the crowd, kung-fu style, earning himself 120 hours of community service.

While, in 2004, then Everton star and future United all-time record goalscorer Rooney was at the centre of newspaper allegations he paid prostitutes for sex, as he was captured on CCTV visiting a brothel in Liverpool 10 times.

He was alleged to have slept with 48-year-old grandmother Patricia Tierney, who wore a rubber catsuit and was known as the ‘Auld Slapper’. She later denied these claims as Rooney went on to admit sleeping with unnamed prostitutes.

Gazza, whose reply prompted howls of laughter from Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards on the podcast, ended up picking Tottenham over the Red Devils. He joked: “I think it took him [Sir Alex] six years to speak to us again.”
