King Charles banknotes launched and one cheeky gag is already marching forward

Banknotes with King Charles’ face on them are finally here – so gear up for the jokes about what they’ll be used for.

It’s far from a national secret that the shortened version of the monarch’s name is Charlie – which most will be aware is also among the most popular slang terms for Cocaine. That’s right, in the words of at least some members of the British public, it is time to get ‘Charlie on Charlie.’

Social media has come alive with the announcement of the new notes, which break the longstanding norm of the late Queen’s face appearing on the side. For the first time since Elizabeth II’s image adorned a £1 note in 1960, a different monarch is pictured on paper currency.

Straight out of the blocks, someone said in a comment on ITV’s Facebook page: “Gonna be some charlie on charlie this weekend I bet.”

Another person wrote: “Charlie been on notes for years” while a third chipped in: “There was Charlie on old notes already”.

Jumping on the bandwagon a fourth person shouted: “More CHARLIE on those NOTES than been up their NOSE”.

The first bills with the Queen’s face appeared eight years after her accession to the throne in 1952, her son hasn’t had to wait so long.

Shoppers will be able to use bank notes featuring an image of the Queen, the most famous in currency terms having been taken of her in the 1990s at age 64, which is still in circulation today.

But despite this historic moment, one we have not seen for more than 60 years, Brits were quick to be Brits and crack on with the jokes.
