Wetherspoons roll out adjustments to 788 pubs – it is dangerous information for footie dodgers

Budget pub chain Wetherspoons has announced it is planning to make a major change to 788 of its boozers from next week.

It’s good news for footie fans too – and bad for those whole like a quiet pint – with the chain planning to screen Euros 2024 games at a huge raft of its pubs. The Euros kicks off on June 14 with England set to open their account on Sunday, June 16 against Serbia.

Some 20 of the pubs that don’t have screens won’t be showing the games, which are taking place in Germany.

A spokesperson previously said: “Football fans can enjoy the Euro 2024 tournament live at Wetherspoon.

“Wetherspoon’s pubs will be showing all of the fixtures throughout June and July. So wherever your local is, you won’t miss out on the action.”

Scotland is set to kick off its account against the hosts on June 14.

The chain’s owner Sir Tim Martin has recently dispelled some of the myths around what it is that keeps their prices so cheap. Speaking to the Sun Tim explained: “There’s no real secret, we sell a lot of beer. We’ve got bigger pubs than average and we’ve got very long-term relationships with our beer suppliers, so they know that we’re not buying it for three months or six months. Our longest contract now has got 17 years to go.”

He explained he operated under the model pioneered by US supermarket giant Walmart, which traded on the premise of selling three for two. “Our average sales per pub are probably far more than double most pubs,” Martin added.
