Terror as snake-like creature discovered slithering inside pack of Sainsbury’s spuds

A family from North Wales were left stunned after discovering a “snake-like” creature in their bag of Sainsbury’s spuds.

The Flintshire family were holidaying in Cornwall when they stumbled upon the shocking find. Creepy footage shows the critter wriggling amongst the potatoes, still inside the packaging. Despite its snake-like appearance, it’s believed to have been a slow worm, a type of lizard native to the UK.

Sainsbury’s has since apologised for the family’s “rare experience”. A family member, who wished to remain anonymous, said they were left screaming after receiving an online order at the remote property they were staying at on Saturday, May 25, reports North Wales Live.

They said: “On the Sunday, we planned to cook a roast dinner. We started prepping early in the morning as we’d planned a day out. We took the bag of potatoes out of the cupboard ready to prepare, we saw something in the bag but assumed it was a thick potato root.

“Then to our absolute horror we saw it move.

“It was clear from the start that it was large but only upon closer inspection did we realise it was snake-like. Given our fear of snakes, you can imagine the screams.”

They added: “Once we calmed down and showed other family members we took a closer look. There it was, slithering around all of our potatoes whilst we looked on in horror. We had no idea what to do next.”

The woman said family members bravely rescued the creature from the bag and let it free.

Sainsbury’s is now investigating

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We have been in touch with [the customer] to apologise for this rare experience and offer a gesture of goodwill.

“We have processes in place to prevent this from happening and are investigating this case with our supplier.”

According to The Wildlife Trusts, a slow worm is actually a legless lizard.

They explained: “Its identity is given away by its abilities to shed its tail and blink with its eyelids. Slow worms can be found in heathland, tussocky grassland, woodland edges and rides where they can find invertebrates to eat and a sunny patch in which to sunbathe.”

“They are often found in mature gardens and allotments, where they like hunting around the compost heap.”
