Liverpool legend Alan Hansen is seriously ill in hospital, as announced by the club.

The ex-Scotland international, now 69, was rushed to hospital and remains in a critical condition, reports the Mirror. Hansen had a 14-year stint at Anfield and was part of the unstoppable team that clinched eight league titles and three European Cups.

In total, the Scotland international hoisted 23 trophies during his dazzling career at Liverpool, where he is still considered one of the club’s greatest ever players. Hansen’s exceptional skill with the ball led many to believe he could have excelled in today’s game.

Liverpool stated: “The thoughts and support of everyone at Liverpool FC are with our legendary former captain Alan Hansen, who is currently seriously ill in hospital.”

“A defender of supreme elegance, Hansen’s impressive array of honours across a 14-year spell with the Reds he joined from Partick Thistle in 1977 included eight league titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups and three League Cups.

“‘Jocky’, as he was affectionately known by teammates, ranks in the top 10 for all-time appearances for the club having played 620 matches, and the Scottish centre-back also served as Liverpool captain for four seasons.

“The club is currently liaising with Alan’s family to offer our support during this challenging time, and our thoughts, wishes and hopes are with Alan and all of the Hansen family.”

After hanging up his boots in 1991, Hansen turned into a telly footie expert, spending a whopping 22 years as the main man on BBC’s pundit bench. He’s been hailed for totally transforming how the game gets picked apart on the box.

He became a broadcasting icon with the Match of the Day crew, not to mention his stints during World Cups, Euros, and even the Olympics.
