Labour has urged Tata to wait until after the General Election on July 4 so it can hold talks with the steel giant if it wins
Tata Steel has warned Labour’s plans for Port Talbot put the long-term future of its steelmaking in jeopardy.
Labour has urged Tata to wait until after the General Election on July 4 so it can hold talks with the steel giant if it wins.
But yesterday Tata said it was imperative that whoever wins sticks to the plan it has already agreed with the Government.
The Indian-owned firm will this autumn close two blast furnaces at the steelworks in South Wales.
It will replace them with greener electric arc furnaces, with £500million of taxpayer support, with 2,800 jobs lost.
Tata said it was ‘concerned’ that Labour figures are urging it to leave one furnace on.
It added that ‘further political uncertainty on the timing and form of the grant’ will place ‘the long-term future of steelmaking at Port Talbot’ at risk.
