Wetherspoon’s prospects give ‘longest chip ever a ‘standing ovation’

Wetherspoon’s customers have glorified what could possibly be the “longest chip ever” following an hilarious clip filmed at one of the chain’s pubs in London.

This video, initially published on TikTok, features a gratified customer raising her extraordinary find for all to witness, triggering amusement and applause across the beer garden. “Look at that! Oh my god!” she declared.

It prompted one TikTok user to react to the snippet: “It makes you proud to be British.” Others, however, were left scratching their heads about the enormous size of the chip, with comments such as “no potato is that big”. Another pondered: “But how could it be that long? What potato is that size? Unless its ground up potato then moulded into that shape.”

A fellow user echoed these sentiments: “I just wanna know how blummin’ massive that potato was.” While another speculated whether the chip was “AI generated”.

Despite the ‘Spoons diner only having 62 followers, her 11-second video has gone viral and has since been seen by over 360,000 viewers.

Reddit users also had a field day when this gastronomic marvel made an appearance on their platform, meanwhile, after the clip was shared to the platform. One enthused member of the CasualUK subreddit captured the mood, commenting: “No one else in the world would ever understand what the f*** is going on here and the kind of culture of a Spoons.

“I love these little nuances that only people from ‘home’ would ever get. Imagine trying to explain to an American or even someone with English as a second language, that an entire pub clapped at a chip!”

A second chimed in with a bit of British pride, adding: “Only the British would ever be so quirky and wholesome as to clap at a chip! None of those silly other countries could possibly understand our randomness. There is a silly quality to UK humor that a lot of others don’t quite get and certainly wouldn’t initiate.”

A third quipped: “Humanity has reached it’s high watermark, it’s down hill from here. We will never see such achievement again.” Whilst a fourth shared a nostalgic anecdote: “My family used to hold a longest chip competition at McDonalds birthdays parties… my gran gave my younger sister a chip and the thing only bloody won, and I threw such a big tantrum they didn’t hold any more after that. Anyway this woman beats my sister’s nepotism chip so congratulations to her!”

It comes after a Tesco shopper discovered what she believed was the “biggest chip ever” in a packet she bought from the supermarket earlier this year. Marie Sparkles was about to cook her tea when she stumbled across the phenomenon.

The super-sized snack remains uneaten in the freezer as the clinical assistant joked no one wanted to eat it. Marie, from Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, said: “It’s the biggest chip I’ve ever seen. It’s just over seven inches long and an inch wide, not quite a record holder but still very long and chunky. When I looked at it I thought ‘God you could do some damage with it’ because it was so big, so we just laughed and put it away.”

The Daily Star reached out to Wetherspoons, who declined to comment about the massive chip.
