‘Dark omen’ horses that broke free in London make Trooping the Colour return

The ‘dark omen’ horses that broke free in London earlier this year have made a return for Trooping the Colour.

King Charles marked his official birthday today (Saturday, June 15) surrounded by senior members of the Royal Family and watched by adoring fans. The royals took to the balcony at Buckingham Palace this afternoon to watch the annual Red Arrow flypast.

Also in attendance this year were a group of horses who got spooked and bolted through the capital’s city centre back in April. Four people were injured one of the animals, which witnesses said was ” covered in blood” and multiple collisions with the animals were reported.

Some people said the incident was a ‘dark omen’

At the time, the phenomenon was branded a ‘dark omen’ – especially as Big Ben’s hands briefly stopped turning shortly before the horses made their break for freedom, the Daily Star previously reported.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) one person said at the time: “All we need now is all the ravens to leave the Tower of London & we got a full set of portents of woe.”

Another added: “I’m not a superstitious person but this is absolutely the sort of omen which ushers in 500 years of darkness suffering and strife.”

However Army vets have now nurtured the horses back to health and have been taking them around the streets of London, allowing the creatures to adjust to the sights and sounds before taking on their official responsibilities.

A staggering 242 horses are on parade today in honour of the King. Three of them were part of the pack that broke loose.

One horse, named Tennyson, was part of the Sovereign’s Escort while Vanquish and Trojan are also on parade. Quaker and Vida – the grey horse which was pictured covered in blood – are continuing their recovery in the Chilterns.

Today also marked the first time Kate Middleton returned to royal duties following her cancer diagnosis in March. The Princess of Wales is understood to be doing well but is “not out of the woods yet” and is still receiving preventative chemotherapy.
