Euro followers need Romanian star booked for his ‘garish blue barnet’ towards Ukraine

Euro 2024 fans have demanded Andrei Rațiu is booked on the basis of his barnet alone.

Ratiu, 25, lined up with his Romanian side for their opening Euros clash on Monday afternoon against Ukraine. And the Rayo Vallecano full-back quickly stole the show when cameras picked up on his bright blue trim.

Even Mykhailo Mudryk’s top knot – that looked like an onion – was unable to overshadow the garish haircut. And one fan joked: “He should get booked on the basis of that barnet!”

“He looks like Sonic the Hedgehog, what was he thinking when he went to the barbers,” a second said. While a third replied: “Is Andrei Ratiu getting sponsored by Lidl?”

“This who Mudryk’s going up against, five successful dribbles are a minimum,” a fourth pointed out. And another added: “That’s something for sure…”

However, one fan pointed out: “Continuing Romanian national team tradition of weird hair that started at the 1998 World Cup!”

At the 1998 World Cup, the entire Romanian team, famously, put on some sort of Eminem tribute act when they all rocked up to France with bleach blonde hair.

“You couldn’t really tell who was who on the pitch,” Emil Grădinescu, who commentated on France ’98 for Romania’s national television station, told Vice.

“I’d heard a rumour that the players had decided to dye their hair, but I didn’t actually believe it. At worse, I thought maybe a few of them had gotten highlights.

“So you can imagine my shock when we saw 11 blond heads bob out of the dressing room. Foreign commentators kept coming up to ask me what was going on, but I had no idea.”
