Tory Jeremy Hunt caught on tape moaning nobody applauds ‘our very good file’

Jeremy Hunt has been caught complaining there has been a “total failure to appreciate our superb record” after 14 years of Tory rule.

On a secret recording, the deluded Chancellor said he was “incredibly frustrated” that people think the country is going to “hell in a handcart”.

The Tories have been accused of breaking Britain as families struggle to make ends meet, patients face huge NHS waiting lists and criminals are let out early as prisons are full. The economy has flatlined under Mr Hunt with the latest figures showing there was 0% growth. But he told a Tory fundraising dinner he was annoyed that people think things are not going well.

Speaking at the event in April, the Cabinet minister said: “As far as the election is concerned we won’t win it if we are not united and if we lose this election it will be because the British people do not want to vote for a divided party and it will be our own stupid fault and we need to remember that.”

He added: “The thing that is causing most division and dissent in the newspapers is a total failure to appreciate our superb record since 2010. I just want to say that I feel incredibly frustrated at this narrative that is building up that things are going to hell in the handcart.”

Mr Hunt tried to blame the aftermath of the global financial crisis – which started three years before the Tories took power – as well as the pandemic and Ukraine war for the problems.

“What has happened over the last 14 years is that we have had to cope with three of the biggest economic shocks in our lifetime, not one of the biggest shocks but three altogether in that period of Conservatives have been in office,” he said.

Mr Hunt was guest of honour at the fundraising dinner organised by the Tory Reform Group. Tickets for the event, which were available to members of the public, cost £90. He has served as a minister for most of the time that the Conservatives have been in power.

David Cameron appointed him as Culture Secretary after the party’s victory in 2010, before he became the longest-serving Health Secretary in history.

What have we got to be thankful for after 14 years of Tories?

1. Highest tax burden in 70 years.

2. NHS waiting lists at record high.

3. A&E and cancer targets missed every month since 2015.

4 Dentistry crisis leaves people forced to pull out own teeth.

5. Partygate scandal saw Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak fined.

6. Mini-Budget sent mortgages soaring.

7. Austerity has wrecked vital public services.

8. Raw sewage scandal.

9. Dangerous concrete leaves schools crumbling.

10. Tory chaos means five PM in 14 years.

Theresa May made him Foreign Secretary, but he left government after losing out to Boris Johnson in the 2019 Tory leadership race. He then made a return as Liz Truss appointed him Chancellor in the wake of her catastrophic mini-Budget.

Mr Hunt is facing a battle to remain as an MP. He is standing in the newly-created constituency of Godalming and Ash in Surrey.

Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones said: “Gillian Keegan asked why nobody would say she’s doing a good job when schools were collapsing. Rishi Sunak locked himself away in Downing Street complaining that voters are not giving him enough credit.

“And now Jeremy Hunt is caught complaining that Brits aren’t giving him credit for the Tory economic record. It is absolute nonsense. We now know that the biggest threat to the economy is five more years of Conservative chaos.”
