Wayne Lineker hires Arnie’s bodybuilding rival to guard him after Ibiza scrap

Wayne Lineker has employed the help of a former Mr Universe winner and one-time Arnold Schwarzenegger foe after he was knocked out cold by a drunken yob in Ibiza.

Gary Lineker’s brother, 62, was attacked and left unconscious in the early hours of Wednesday, June 12. The distressing event occurred outside Eden bar in San Antonio, Ibiza, shortly after Wayne had been involved in a heated exchange with a group of men who seemed to be harassing one of his female friends.

Now Eddy Ellwood, a five times Mr Universe, had reportedly been enlisted to help. The 60-year-old, who beat Arne’s record for Mr Universe titles, was “asked to hang around for longer as ‘muscle’”, sources told The Sun.

It comes after Lineker said it ‘could’ve been worse’ after his ordeal last Wednesday. He said he was “lucky” he wasn’t closer to the wall behind him, or the outcome could have been horrible.

He said: “I wanted to write this post to let everyone know that I’m doing ok… I have a few stitches and a swollen lip.

“It could have been much worse so I count myself very fortunate I wasn’t standing 2 yards further back, as my head would have impacted the wall.

“Obviously the video is very disturbing to see especially for my family. The papers were very accurate and it was a simple case of me just trying to protect a girl from being harassed.

“Thank you everyone for all your messages of concern the support has been really overwhelming.”

Mr Ellwood has had his own troubles recently, too. He was hauled in front of Teesside Magistrates’ Court in 2022 because he reopened his gym Xtreme Fitness, in Hartlepool, during lockdown.

He said he did it after members rang him with suicidal thoughts during the Covid restrictions.

The strongman described his gym as a “mental health hospital” and said he received emails telling him “you saved my life” after the reopening, TeessideLive reported.

In April last year, he was convicted of breaking lockdown laws and fined £56k.
