Ex-Tottenham star Nabil Bentaleb has been rushed to hospital with an unnamed illness.
The Algerian midfielder, 29, who also played for Newcastle during his two spells in the Premier League, became ill on Tuesday. His current club Lille – full name Lille Olympique Sporting Club or LOSC – have confirmed Bentaleb is recovering in hospital.
In a statement, the Ligue 1 side said: “LOSC informs that Nabil Bentaleb suffered from illness on the evening of Tuesday, June 18. “The player was immediately taken into care and sent to Lille University Hospital for hospitalisation.
“LOSC accompanies Nabil as closely as possible during this ordeal and gives him all its support. The club also calls for greater respect for the private life of its player.”
The 6ft 2in star has 52 caps for his country and represented Algeria at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015, 2017 and 2023.
He joined Tottenham’s academy as a teenager, before making his Premier League debut in 2013. Scoring his first goal for the club against future team Newcastle, he notably played in the 2015 League Cup Final, in the 2-0 defeat to London rivals Chelsea.
After a loan spell with Bundesliga outfit Schalke he moved to Germany on a permanent basis in 2017, only to move back to England in January 2020 with a short loan spell at Newcastle.
He then moved to French side Angers, before transferring to his hometown team Lille in 2023.
