A North Wales village has been left mildly scandalised after four letters were mown into the grass of a children’s playing field.
At first glance, they appear to spell “COOK”, but locals insist the word is far more cheeky. The rogue lawn art in Ewloe, Flintshire, has become the talk of the town, sparking both shock and laughter among residents. The identity of the prankster remains unknown, leading some to dub them Deeside’s answer to Banksy.
“Has Banksy bought himself a lawnmower? ” one local quipped online after sharing photos of the spectacle.

The reason behind the 50-foot-long letters neatly mown into the grass at Big Park playing fields in the St David’s area of Ewloe remains a mystery. Given their precision, it’s believed a ride-on mower was used, with tyre tracks adding to the confusion by suggesting a second letter “C”.
“It definitely doesn’t say ‘cook’,” one resident confirmed, reports North Wales Live.
Darren Sterry, planning chair at Hawarden Community Council, has been on a mission to uncover more about the grassy graffiti. He commented: “I can’t be 100% sure what it says – but it could only be one of two words.”
“Seeing it was a bit of a shock. Whoever did it has very good mowing skills as the letters are so well done. But no one seems to know why.”
“Nor has anyone seen the word being mown. If it was done at night, surely someone would have heard it? “.
Aerial snaps later confirmed the message was either a rude word or something to do with chickens. Back in 2015, a cheeky 100ft willy popped up in the Clwydian Hills, hiding in plain sight for two months until a dusting of snow exposed it.
Just a couple of years back, eagle-eyed people spotted another massive manhood carved into a field near Swindon, Wiltshire. The Ewloe job might not have been as artistic, but it was definitely tidier.
One Mold woman couldn’t contain her giggles at the sight on social media, exclaiming: “This is absolutely bloody hilarious! ” Another chimed in with a cheeky dig: “Wow, the universe is really transpiring for me way to get a message to my ex, lol! “.
While some locals legged it down to the park for an eyeful, others raised their glasses to the Deeside Banksy. “Whoever it was they are owed a decent drink,” toasted one resident.
Another fan hailed the prankster’s “absolute class”. “I’d just like to thank you for adding a serious amount of amusement to my evening,” she gushed.
Some spoke about a miffed council worker being the mastermind, especially since the verges had a trim recently. But Cllr Sterry isn’t buying it, even though there’s been a fair share of moans about grass-cutting around that very field.
“A resident complained about the lack of cutting, and the length of the grass, on the playing field,” he said. “But it’s not the community council’s responsibility. I chased it up and eventually the field was mown three or four weeks ago. Since then, the grass appears to have grown long again.”
“I saw recently that people in Buckley cut the grass on their local football pitch as they were sick of waiting for the county council to do it. But if someone in Ewloe was complaining about council inaction, you’d have thought they would have added an “s” to the end of the word! “.
Unlike Banksy’s artwork, Ewloe’s controversial graffiti is unlikely to be preserved for posterity.
