Sunak has some nerve
Rishi Sunak deserves no credit for the fall in inflation. When it was on the rise, the government claimed it was the result of forces outside its control so it follows that any decline is also a consequence of external factors.
Any celebrations by the Prime Minister would also be misjudged when so many households are still struggling to make ends meet. Although the overall rate of inflation is down, prices across the board are 20% higher than in 2021 and food and soft drinks cost nearly a third extra. And mortgage holders and renters are still paying more as a result of Liz Truss’s disastrous mini-Budget.
Families are suffering the tightest squeeze in living standards and the highest level of taxes since the Second World War. For Mr Sunak to claim the economy has turned is an insult to the millions of households trying to keep their heads above water and underlines how out of touch he is.
Just stop that
In a free society everyone should have the right to protest. But that does not come with a right to commit mindless acts of vandalism. The Just Stop Oil protesters who turned Stonehenge orange deserve to be met with the full force of the law.
The defacing of treasured monuments or artworks is not a clever way of gaining publicity. It is an idiotic way of damaging the cause they are seeking to champion.
By continuing with these senseless stunts, JSO is undermining the climate change fight and playing into the hands of those who want to halt progress on cutting emissions. If they want to stop oil they should stop behaving so stupidly.
On your ’mark
After a nervy win in their opening game fans will be looking for England to put in a commanding display against Denmark. Here’s hoping it’s all Kane and no pain against the Danes.
