England informed to offer Alexander-Arnold function change – nevertheless it retains him in midfield

Ex-England star Wes Brown has dropped a bombshell by saying Trent Alexander-Arnold should be benched for Euro 2024.

The Manchester United legend dished out his bold opinion on the latest episode of our podcast Euro Thrash, available on Apple, Spotify and YouTube, reports the Mirror.

The Liverpool ace’s stint in England’s midfield alongside Declan Rice raised eyebrows due to his lack of experience in that role. Despite holding his own in the first two group matches, Brown reckons the 25-year-old can have more of an impact coming off the bench.

“How many times has he played in midfield before? I’m not saying he looks a little lost, but sometimes he’s not sure what to do,” said the 44-year-old football pundit. “We’ve got so many good players in midfield that we could play.”

Brown suggests bringing Alexander-Arnold on in the second-half when legs are weary and his killer passes can really slice through defences. “I think we should bring Trent on in the 60th minute when everyone’s tired and then he will be able to switch them balls. when you start the game, you’re all on it, you’re not tired, you’re focused.

“Trent is a brilliant passer of the ball, but early on it’s not necessarily on all of the time. I think he can be brilliant coming on as a sub, when it’s a bit open.”

Despite Gareth Southgate having midfield options like Conor Gallagher, Kobbie Mainoo, and Adam Wharton at his disposal, the England gaffer caught flak after complaining about missing a player like Kalvin Phillips after their lacklustre 1-1 draw with Denmark on Thursday (June 20).

Despite leading Group C with four points, England’s performance in the tournament has been lacklustre so far despite many having tipped them to win the tournament.

They will face Slovenia on Tuesday (June 25), providing another opportunity to impress before the knockout stages.
