Hamilton can’t cover awkwardness as Russell makes ‘Spanish girlfriends’ declare

George Russell’s cheeky ‘Spanish girlfriends’ quip towards Lewis Hamilton left the seven-time world champion a little lost for words.

Hamilton and Russell have been competing with each other at Mercedes throughout the campaign and will be rivals next year when Hamilton joins Ferrari. The Brits were entertaining fans at a fan zone in Barcelona ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix over the weekend.

While they were repeatedly having cheeky verbal jabs at each other, Russell aimed a bold playful barb at Hamilton about his lovelife. The atmosphere turned a touch frosty and edgy as Hamilton looked like he was trying to process what was said to him.

The pair were questioned over their favourite Spanish foods during the show. Russell quickly expressed his appreciation for Spain’s culinary delights, due to his Spanish girlfriend, Carmen Montero Mundit, reports the Mirror. Hamilton’s response was: “I don’t have a Spanish girlfriend so I don’t really know a lot of Spanish foods.”

Russell cheekily cut in before Hamilton could finish, asserting: “You don’t have a Spanish girlfriend, you have Spanish girlfriends.”

Hamilton was left chuckling and nodding awkwardly as the fans erupted into laughter. His facial expression was almost one of retreat and admission that Russell won their mini-verbal battle. Last year, Hamilton was often spotted with Colombian, Spanish-speaking megastar Shakira, including one time when they were both enjoying Miami boat trip with each other.

The ‘Waka Waka’ singer was also seen supporting Hamilton at last year’s Spanish GP. Despite being notoriously private about his personal life, speculation was rife that Hamilton and Shakira were about to become an item, particularly after they were seen dining with celeb mates Daniel Caesar, Fai Khadra, and Mustafa post-Spanish GP.

But Shakira has recently shut down any romance rumours in a Rolling Stone interview, firmly stating: “What space do I have for a man right now?”

While Russell won their cheeky verbal spar, Hamilton got one over his Mercedes partner on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Hamilton bagged his first podium of the season by finishing third, one place in front of Russell, who just missed out on the top three. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen took another step closer to a fourth consecutive F1 world title, edging out Lando Norris to snatch the win in Spain.
