Man Utd followers ‘owe Ralf Rangnick apology’ as Austria stun France and Netherlands

Football fans have joked Manchester United supporters owe Ralf Rangnick an apology after Austria topped Group D at Euro 2024.

Rangnick’s Austria had been drawn against the might of France and the Netherlands in Germany, but after stunning the Dutch with a 3-2 win they topped the group. And it wasn’t a fluke, with Austria looking impressive in all three of their games.

It was a far cry from the kind of football that Rangnick, 65, produced during his ill-fated spell at the Red Devils. One fan fumed: “The English media owe Ralf Rangnick an apology. Some Manchester United fans owe Ralf Rangnick an apology. Ralf Rangnick was never a problem at Manchester United!”

“Rangnick masterminding. Sabitzer and Depay scoring. Weghorst assisting. It’s the post-Fergie Man Utd roadshow,” a second joked. While a third shared: “Ralf Rangnick I owe you an apology, I wasn’t familiar with your game…”

“This Austria team under Ralf Rangnick beats England under Gareth Southgate,” a fourth posted. And another added: “Ralf Rangnick, fair play. Making the doubters eat their words…”

The German coach finished the 2021/22 season in sixth place with 58 points, the worst points-total record in United’s Premier League history. Even Cristiano Ronaldo was left unconvinced by Rangnick in the north west. “This guy is not even a coach,” the five-time Ballon d’Or winner said.

“All the coaches that I had in my career, I call them boss because if they assume the job we have to call them in that way. But deep inside me, I never saw him as the boss.”

Rangnick has silently rebuilt his reputation with the Central European side – and they’ve now advanced to the knockout stages of the Euros. As the winners of Group D, Austria will face second place in Group F. England could face third place in Group D – the Netherlands – or third place in Group E or F.
