Britain’s oldest and ‘beloved’ gorilla Pertinax has died at 42 ‘leaving legacy’

UK’s oldest known silverback gorilla, Pertinax, has died at the age of 42.

Paignton Zoo in Devon announced the sad news, describing the primate as a “beloved” member of their family and a favourite among visitors for the past 27 years.

The western lowland gorilla was also a star in his own right, inspiring books and starring as Hank in CBBC‘s ‘The Zoo’.

He passed away on Tuesday, surrounded by zookeepers and the veterinary team. It is believed that Pertinax had been suffering from an illness that did not respond to extensive treatment.

Arriving at Paignton Zoo in 1997, Pertinax quickly won over staff with his charm.

In 2006, he became a father figure to three younger males, Kiondu, Kivu and N’Dowe, helping them grow into gentle, sociable silverbacks. His legacy extends beyond the zoo, touching the hearts of fans nationwide.

The zoo issued a statement, saying that they “knew immediately” that Pertinax was “special”, because of his “calm yet somewhat cheeky personality”.

“Since his arrival 27 years ago, Pertinax had become something of a celebrity… His legacy extends beyond our zoo, touching the hearts of fans across the country.”

“We feel incredibly privileged to have cared for Pertinax for nearly three decades.”

“He was truly one of a kind and his loss will be felt deeply by our community, especially by his keepers who knew him best.”

“We humbly ask for your support and kindness during this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, another famous primate is reportedly living his best life, seeing out his golden years in a plush animal sanctuary.

It’s understood Michael Jackson’s former pet monkey ‘Bubbles’ is living in a retirement sanctuary for animals where he enjoys activities like painting and listening to flute music.

The eccentric animal turned 41 last month and by all accounts has lived a rather crazy life in tow with the Beat It star. He was moved to the Florida sanctuary after he tried to take his own life when his ex-owner, who died 15 years ago yesterday, June 25, 2009, was charged with child molestation, reports Daily Star.

His current abode is paid for by the Jackson estate.
