Football followers say Cambridge United’s new package seems to be like ‘Wetherspoons plate’

Football fans are always up for a bit of kit chat, and Cambridge United‘s latest effort has certainly caused a stir on social media.

The League One club, who traditionally play in amber and black, launched their new away colours earlier this week ahead of the 2024/25 football season. It’s unique design has prompted some X (formerly Twitter) users to compare it to a “Wetherspoon’s plate”, however.

The feedback won’t be a concern to the U’s commercial team though, who hailed on Monday (June 24): “The 24/25 Away has already surpassed last season’s previous record of opening day sales. Thank you!”

After the Footy Accumulators X account caught wind of it, one of their followers simply shared: “Spoon’s dinner plate.” Someone else couldn’t help but chuckle: “If you’ve ever found yourself wanting to wear a Wetherspoons plate then now’s your chance!”

And there was no love lost from another who trashed it as, “It’s honestly a nans tablecloth. Disgusting.”

Not everyone is throwing shade at the new threads though as one fan raved: “Fresh kit that, I like that, fair play.” A second concurred: “I like it, completely different to others.” Whilst a third praised: “That’s a belter. Absolute vibes.”

Kitted out by Umbro, the brains at Cambridge United say this fancy number is “inspired by the flow of the city”, and indeed, there is a crafty nod to ceramics too.

“The eye-catching vibrant away shirt was initially inspired by the plethora of water lilies along the River Cam, with the imagination growing further afield to an aqua-inspired floral baroque design, which can often be seen in far-eastern pottery,” reads the blurb on the club’s website.

Elsewhere in football kit news, it looks like England might need to up their kit game. All the kits strutting their stuff at Euro 2024 have been thrown into the fashion ring and judged accordingly – but alas, it’s not looking too sharp for the Three Lions.

The iconic white shirt donned by Gareth Southgate’s side scraped in at a dismal 32nd out of all of the tournament’s 48 kits rated, and if you thought that was rough, the away kit took an even bigger spanking coming in 43rd.
