Marc Guehi says minister dad might miss crunch Slovakia recreation as ‘God comes first’

Marc Guehi said his church minister dad may not see him play in England’s Euro 2024 last-16 showdown against Slovakia – because ‘God comes first’.

The defender’s father John, 52, may have religious duties in Lewisham, south east London, and not be able to watch the match on Sunday (June 30).

Marc, who played the drums in the church where his dad preaches, said he would expect his father to be working.

Asked if his dad will be watching the footballer replied: “I actually don’t know. Usually church, God comes first.

“So I would expect him to be at church. But he could turn up I don’t know.

“I’ll have to message him later to ask him.’’

In the past Guehi, 23, has admitted `there were definitely times where I wasn’t able’ to play football on Sundays ‘just because God first in my house was the rule’.

“Luckily some of our games were Saturday,’’ he said.

The footballer said his parents ‘knew where my life was going’ and ‘were fine’.

“As you get older it becomes your job as well as something you love,’’ he said. “But definitely now if I have the time I still go to church.’’
