Sunak slammed for ‘soiled ways’ as Starmer wades in on England row – updates

Tory PM Rishi Sunak has been slammed after his campaign sunk to new depths while Labour’s Keir Starmer has waded into the England row amid a string of poor performances by the Three Lions.

Mr Sunak was branded “desperate” by Labour leader Mr Starmer after he shared an image on X/Twitter that showed the backs of a man, a woman and a young child with their hands raised in the air. The caption read: “Don’t surrender your family’s future to Labour.”

Brandan Cox, the husband of MP Jo Cox who was shot and stabbed to death in 2016, criticised the ad and responded: “Labour are going to gun down your family. Don’t pretend you weren’t warned… Er…”

Mr Starmer branded the PM’s ad as “desperate” before turning to the fortune of the Three Lions following their lacklustre Euros campaign so far.

During a visit to a college in Staffordshire, Arsenal-fan Mr Starmer said: “Too much criticism, get behind them, get them over the line. This is a really important competition. England always do a bit of this at the beginning of competitions, but get behind the team.

“It’s a brilliant squad of players who all had fantastic seasons for their respective clubs. Let’s get behind the team, this is going to click and I want less of a criticism and more of the support.“

Sunak sidesteps question about Tory MP allegedly betting on himself to lose

Rishi Sunak sidestepped a question about Sir Philip Davies allegedly betting on himself to lose his seat, but insisted he was taking a firm line with candidates who broke gambling rules.

Asked about Sir Philip, the Prime Minister told reporters: “The Gambling Commission are responsible for investigations.

“I’ve been very clear from the outset of this, if we’re made aware of anything we will conduct – as you’ve seen – internal inquiries of our own and take action as appropriate.

“And that’s what I’ve done, suspending two candidates.

“I was furious to learn about the allegations, when they first came to light and the idea that people would cheat and break the laws is the opposite of what I think public service means.

“That’s why I’ve been clear that anyone who is found to have broken the rules should face the full consequences of that, including the law, and I will make sure they are booted out of the Conservative Party.”
