Police have called off the search for Jay Slater nearly two weeks after they began their manhunt.
Officials say have the case ‘remains open’ as they await any further information that could lead them to the teenager’s whereabouts. Officers had been scouring the mountain village of Masca in Tenerife for the missing 19-year-old since June 17.
However the Civil Guard said today (Sunday, June 30) the near fortnight-long search had ended. They said police would continue to look into any tip-offs or other information that could help them locate the apprentice brick-layer.
However active work to find Jay has now ended. A Civil Guard spokesperson said today: “The search operation has now finished although the case remains open.:
Meanwhile a well-placed source clarified: “The daily operation which has been going on in and around Masca close to where Jay was last seen has been brought to an end. If any information comes in that merits a new search though it will be acted upon.
“My understanding is Jay’s parents have been informed of what obviously is a major development. Nothing of any relevance was found during yesterday’s large-scale search.”
Jay was last spotted by a local resident in Masca, on the northwest of the Spanish island, just after 8am on June 17. The witness said he was walking north along the road out of the village and had stopped to ask her for directions.
His phone was last detected near a look-out point where search teams gathered yesterday to begin the “last push” of the operation.
