Liverpool goal Anthony Gordon opens up after Newcastle agree membership document sale

Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon has sung the praises of Elliot Anderson after his team-mate transferred to Nottingham Forest.

In a mad dash against time, Newcastle offloaded two players on Sunday to dodge a financial fair play bullet, with winger Yankuba Minteh also packing his bags for Brighton after a cracking loan spell at Feyenoord. It’s a bittersweet farewell for 21-year-old Anderson, who’s cutting ties with the club he’s called home since he was just eight.

The attacking midfielder has had 55 runs out for the Magpies and took to social media with a heartfelt message post-transfer. With a video montage of his rise through the ranks, he penned: “It’s been a dream come true to represent my club for 14 years. Pulling that black and white shirt on at St James’ Park is a moment that will never be taken away from me.”

He added: “I would like to thank everyone involved with the club and all the Geordies that have supported me throughout my journey. I will always support the club and wish nothing but the best for everyone involved. As one door closes another one opens. Thank you NUFC,” reports the Mirror.

Anderson’s £35m price tag puts him up there as the club’s joint-top sale, sharing the podium with Andy Carroll who made tracks for Liverpool back in January 2011. The Reds got tangled up in Newcastle’s PSR saga over the weekend when news broke they could snap up Newcastle’s ace Gordon, but only if they were willing to part ways with their own starlet, centre-back Jarell Quansah, as a swap deal.

Liverpool are massive fans of Gordon, yet they weren’t prepared to say goodbye to hot prospect Quansah, who shone in his debut season last term and is pegged as a key player for the senior team. After riding the bench during England’s nail-biting 2-1 victory against Slovakia at Euro 2024 on Sunday, Gordon didn’t waste time responding to Anderson’s social media farewell, dropping a heartfelt: “Gunna miss you lad.”

Chuffed about his switch to Forest, Anderson gushed to the club’s official site: “I’m buzzing. I think it’s a massive club with big history and I can’t wait to get started.” He added: “It’s the club and the city. I’ve always been very fond of Nottingham Forest and I think it’s a great place to display what I can do and go onto try and help my career.”
