Five largest mysteries in Jay Slater case – ‘Rolex theft’ to fleeing Airbnb

It’s been 16 days since Jay Slater vanished in Tenerife and speculation on his whereabouts is rife.

His mum, Debbie Duncan, shared a heartbreaking statement last night (July 2) saying “words can’t describe the pain” after cops called off the search for the teeanger.

The youngster was on holiday when he disappeared after a night out at the NRG festival at Papagayo nightclub in Playa de las Americas on June 17.

His loved ones are still desperate for answers and below we look at five of the biggest mysteries surrounding the investigation.

Final calls

Jay was last seen travelling with two mystery men – just hours later, he made a panicked call to his friend Lucy to say he was lost in the “middle of nowhere” and needed water.

It would have taken him 11 hours to walk back to his hotel and he claimed his phone only had one per cent battery remaining.

That was the last time Lucy heard from him but the mystery deepened when his other pal, Brad Hargreaves, said Jay called him to say he had veered off tracks.

And worryingly, he also said he could hear Jay slipping on rocks during the video call, leading to a search of the area.

However, the teenager was not found, and Debbie added in her statement: “The Guardia Civil have worked tirelessly up in the mountains where Jay’s last phonecall was traced. They conducted a land search for 12 days which involved every resource they had available.

“Although the land search ended, the Spanish police still continue with their investigations into why Jay had travelled to the location so far away from his accommodation.”

Missing Rolex ‘scuffle’

In recent days, cops were given a lead about a fight in relation to a missing Rolex that took place before Jay vanished.

The “scuffle” supposedly happened at the Papagayo Beach Club where the missing Brit was partying in the early hours of June 17.

It is not clear whether Jay was involved in the disturbance, but one of his mates reportedly told detectives that the apprentice bricklayer may have gone off to try and find the jewellery.

But former detective Mark Williams-Thomas, who is in Tenerife investigating the case, later claimed Jay posted on Snapchat saying he had stolen a £12k watch from an unknown person.

Police have been investigating the fight but there has been no official update on the Rolex theory.

Fleeing Airbnb

The latest mystery was revealed today (July 3) after Mark Williams-Thomas, who exposed Jimmy Saville, claimed Jay fled an Airbnb feeling “scared”.

This was the Airbnb in northwest Tenerife where he went with two men after partying in the early hours.

According to Mark, he left the property in a panic, and he added: “We have received information that would suggest that Jay left the rental property feeling scared and he would not return to the rental, even though that would have been the most sensible course of action, and also where he could have charged his phone, got some water and made contact with friends. We continue to investigate this aspect.”

Mystery men

The mystery men who travelled with Jay after the rave turned out to be two Brits who were labelled “not relevant” by investigators.

They are believed to be in their late 30s or early 40s and live in Luton, Bedfordshire, and they had a “brief” chat with cops before returning to the UK after Jay’s disappearance.

And Mark believes there is no third-party involvement involved in the case and he added: “We have, however, ruled out hostage or kidnapping situation because no credible ransom demand has been made.

“We’ve no evidence at this stage to say there was a third-party criminal involvement in Jay’s disappearance.”

The Civil Guard are also of the belief that Jay was not a victim of a crime – despite wild conspiracy theories on the internet, something the family has labelled “vile” and “extremely distressing”.

‘Massive search’

TikTok sleuth Paul Arnott flew to Tenerife last month to try and crack the complex case – something that has been described as a ‘vanity project’.

But Paul claimed he was in contact with Jay’s close family and he is “convinced” he is the remote area of Masca.

Speaking to the Mail Online, he said: “They keep offering to pay for my food and accommodation, but I keep telling them no.

“I don’t want anything and I don’t want anything from the GoFundMe site. What I would be interested in doing is setting up my own fund to pay for a team from Scotland Mountain Rescue to come out here.”

He also criticised cops for launching what was described as a “massive” new search by a 2000ft ravine.

It happened on July 1 but Paul said just six volunteers were present. Jay’s father and older brother were also seen in the area at the time.

Despite the efforts of many, Jay Slater remains unfound, and his mysterious case continues to baffle experts.
