The prisoner filmed allegedly having a sex with a female prison guard at HMP Wandsworth will not be charged – and his victims are fuming.
Linton Weirich was jailed for four years and nine months after burgling homes in his own neighbourhood of Richmond, South West London, while wearing an electronic tag. But his time behind bars isn’t quite the hard sentence his victims imagined for him.
A video clip of him went viral Saturday as he was filmed appearing to have sex with a woman in uniform at HMP Wandsworth in London, prompting a police investigation. The prison officer involved, Linda De Sousa Abreu, 30, was later arrested for misconduct in public office and appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Monday, July 1.
Weirich, however, will face no criminal charges for his part.
One of Weirich’s burglary victims told The Sun: “I was aware of the video. I just didn’t know that was our burglar. The whole thing seems surreal. This is not what we thought it meant to get hard time in prison. It sounds like the prison officer is the only one being punished, too.”
A Met Police spokesperson previously told the Daily Star: “A police investigation was launched on 28 June after officers were made aware of a video allegedly filmed inside HMP Wandsworth.”
Weirich was jailed in April this year for burglary after stealing £65,000 worth of goods from a safe in a luxury flat in Kensington. The raid took place in March 2022, where he took jewellery, handbags, belts, a suitcase and a laptop.
The 36-year-old is thought to have a partner, who is said to be seven months pregnant – De Sousa Abreu is also married.
One of his victims added: “He managed to get on to the site in the middle of the night. We’d just had the alarm fitted. It went off and he panicked and ran. Police caught him because he was wearing an ankle tag at the time.
“I don’t think he’s the sharpest tool in the box.”
Another victim whose bicycle was stolen by Weirich from outside his home last December, questioned the justice being served in HMP Wandsorth.
He said: “He’s definitely not the smartest cookie if he was just targeting all the people on his doorstep. I can see why police managed to catch him. It’s hardly justice though if he’s having fun in prison.”
De Sousa Abreu is accused of “engaging in a sexual act with a prisoner in a prison cell”. She was granted conditional bail, and will next appear at Isleworth Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing on July 29.
She has been forced to hand in a Portuguese passport, and must remain the southwest London address given in court. She is also forbidden to enter any UK port and must be electronically monitored between the hours of 9pm and 7am.
