Is Alastair Campbell married?

Alastair Campbell is in a civil partnership

Alastair Campbell isn’t married, but he is in a civil partnership with his long-term partner Fiona Millar. Alastair and Fiona first met as trainee journalists 42 years ago and within weeks of meeting each other had already moved in together in Devon.

The couple have been together ever since, and last year entered into a civil partnership with each other during a small ceremony at Camden Register Office in front of four witnesses. Explaining why they decided to legally confirm their commitment after decades together and three children, Alastair said that it was simply “because we could”.

In a piece for the Guardian, the journalist explained that when the Blair government legalised civil partnerships for same-sex couples and David Cameron later brought in the right to same-sex marriage, heterosexual couples became disadvantaged in law. He explained: “The only choice for us was what my mother used to call ‘living in sin’ or marriage, and even though it meant less protection under the law, we both continued to see the former as preferable. There was the option of a non-religious civil marriage ceremony, but it was still ‘marriage’.”

After hearing about another unmarried heterosexual couple who were legally challenging the government over civil partnerships, Fiona became involved in a six-year campaign for equal civil partnerships. Now that both homosexual and heterosexual couples can enter into civil partnerships, Alastair explained: “We and many other couples and families can enjoy the same rights and protections as the married, but without the cultural baggage of marriage.”
