From canines and cats to snakes and horses, polling station animals are bizarre

Dogs at polling stations has become a feature of every election.

There’s nothing better to put a spring in your step than seeing a pooch as you go to cast your vote. But they’re not the only pets that have made cameos this year.

A snake, cats, horses and a tortoise have also been spotted up and down the country waiting for their owners to exercise their democratic right. Neptune the snake was spotted outside a polling station in Dorset.

Dogs in prams . . . always a fun sight

In Cheshire, Ace the horse waited outside Sandbach rugby club. And a parrot was even seen at one site. Pianist Peter from Withington, Manchester, shared a snap of himself standing next to a polling station sign holding up his furry friend. The post said: “Whatever you do today, make sure you vote!”

Anna Skipwith, 54, shared pictures of her pup Tilly, surrounded by other dogs also waiting for their voting owners. Anna, a digital marketing trainer from south London, said: “They are her friends! They mostly know each other, which makes the experience un-stressful for them.

It’s a traditional photo we have every vote. We make it quick because we’re also aware some people are nervous of dogs.”

The images showed 12 dogs patiently waiting outside of a polling station for their owners. Meanwhile, polling firm Ipsos UK shared a survey which found Larry the cat, who lives at No10, has higher favourability ratings than the main party leaders.

It found 44% of the public are favourable towards Larry, known as the ‘Chief Mouser’. This compared to 34% for Labour boss Sir Keir Starmer and 22% for Tory leader Rishi “Biggles” Sunak.

It found he also has higher approval ratings than former PMs Boris “Bozo” Johnson (29%) and “Lettuce” Liz Truss (7%). But just 15% of Brits hold a favourable view of the Downing Street mice.
