Jay Slater’s mum begs Spanish police to allow them to rent consultants in GoFundMe replace

The mum of missing British teenager Jay Slater has begged Spanish police to let them hire experts to help with the search.

The 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer vanished on June 17 while holidaying in the remote Rural de Teno area of Tenerife for a three-day music festival with mates. He left his friends to stay at a secluded Airbnb with two other festival-goers before attempting to make the 11-hour trek back to his lodgings the next.

Jay rang his friend Lucy Mae Law to say his phone battery was down to 1%, he was thirsty and had injured his leg on a cactus, and hasn’t been seen since. And a week after the official police search was called off, Jay’s mum Debbie has called on the Guardia Civil to help them one again.

Posting on the GoFundMe page, she said: “We have been overwhelmed by the kindness and support we have received and would like to thank the local hiking group for all of their help planning the routes to find our Jay. We have been contacted by a wonderful group of locals who have volunteered to continue the search. While they don’t wish to accept financial help for their search, we will be supporting them with supplies and are so grateful for their willingness to help.

“We also continue to be contacted by experienced groups offering to support our search. We are busy talking to them about what they can do to assist. But in order for us to employ their help, they need to have permission from the Spanish authorities.

“We will be sure to keep you all updated on our progress and are so grateful for your continued support to bring our boy home. Please keep sharing and supporting our fundraiser however you can. “

The comments come after the family announced that a new search will begin . . . with Jay’s uncle making a very stark comparison. Glen Duncan confirmed earlier today that the family had been out with some Spanish volunteers, and that they had been through the Masca area by foot and with specialist dogs.

However, he said: “Who knows what the police are doing out here, who knows? They’re not really in touch, it’s all a bit sketchy. They don’t give anything away. I was close to Jay. He was just a typical, great young lad with a massive circle of friends who loved the good time. He was looking forward to coming here. First lads holiday, we’ve all been there, haven’t we?”
