The ‘deadliest beach‘ in America has been named as people are dying at the picturesque location in huge numbers.
Despite its scenic, sandy appearance this popular beach, on the eastern coast of Central Florida, has seen a worrying population die on its shores and at sea for several reasons.
From hurricanes to shark attacks and people getting into difficulty surfing, record numbers of people have died on New Smyrna Beach. It came above nine other Florida beaches in a list of the ‘deadliest’ ones, gaining the unsavoury title.

Earlier this month officials in New Smyrna recorded a jaw-dropping near 400 beach rescues. Rip currents and crowds meant this number of incidents occurred in just a few days.
Dubbed the ‘shark bite capital’ of the world, since July 3 there have been three attacks. However, according to Simmrin Law, 185 shark attacks have been recorded there in total. Yet the beach’s biggest downfall remains its hurricanes.
“While shark attacks often grab headlines, Florida’s beaches rank so high due to the ever-present hurricane risk,” explained lawyer Michael Simmrin on why the top ten most dangerous beaches were in Florida.
“Hurricanes create dangerous rip currents and storm surge, raising the overall risk for beachgoers. With summer approaching and vacations on the minds of many Americans, this study shows the importance of putting safety first when considering a trip to the beach.”
