Death Row inmates in search of love earlier than final meal – together with KKK racist

They say love can be found in the most unexpected of places – and there are some killers on death row who are desperate for this to be true.

The three men featured here have all set up dating profiles after being sentenced to die for committing heinous crimes – including the murder of a little boy.

But rather than fussing over what their last meal will be, they are instead boasting about their (supposedly) good qualities to potential suitors as if it is courting season in Bridgerton.

They are doing so on a penpal site called Wire of Hope that was started by a woman who moved 4,000 miles to marry and have a baby with a death row inmate.

Her unusual love story may give them hope of finding their own partners behind bars – and below they plead their case to potential girlfriends.

Gary Black

Gary Black is known for being a Ku Klux Klan racist. And if that wasn’t a big enough red flag, he is also a murderer whose grisly story was told on Netflix’s I Am A Killer in an episode called The Bogeyman.

Unlike the other men below, his two death row executions were overturned, but he is now seeking love in jail where he will spend the rest of his life without the possibility of parole.

The self-described racist has a violent past including being jailed for 25 years for attacking a woman and nearly killing her.

But it was in October 1998 when the former pimp committed murder after his girlfriend – prostitute Tammy Lawson – claimed she was hit on by a man in a convenience store.

The pair followed the man, Jason Johnson, 28, before pulling up beside him at a traffic light where Black exited his vehicle and approached the passenger window where Johnson was sitting. He then used a knife to stab him in the neck and Johnson passed away three days later.

He was convicted of first-degree murder but later accepted an Alford plea to avoid his death penalty punishment.

And writing on his Wire of Hope profile, Black, now 73, said: “Not a lot of introduction here. I grew up in a very rural part of McDonald County, Missouri, on a small farm south of the little town of Noel. Typical hillbilly country boy.”

He goes on to explain that his mother and grandparents were killed in a crash when he was 12 before he moved to Joplin where there were “faster cars, even faster motorcycles, and even faster females”.

Writing further, he went on to say he graduated high school before being wounded in Vietnam seven months into his first tour with the Marine Corps.

But despite twice avoiding death, he has shown no remorse about murdering the young black man and he said: “I wanted to kill him the moment that truck came to a stop, and I knew he couldn’t get away from me. Right at that moment, I knew he was dead. And he died. I am definitely a racist. I grew up in the Klan; I grew up around it.”

Robert Allen Satterfield

Robert Allen Saterfield was only sentenced to death last year for murdering Ray Shawn Hudson Sr, 28, Maya Rivera, 24, and their son Ray Jr, who was one sleep away from his fifth birthday.

Little Ray Jr witnessed his parents being shot dead in June 2018 moments before Satterfield cruelly took his life too.

The coward burned the three bodies in a pit and despite the chilling case being so recent, he has shamelessly already set up a profile to try and attract women.

Instead of remorse, he is now trying to bag a girlfriend, and on his page he wrote: “Looking to interact with a grown woman. Age, race, location, occupation, not too important. I love attractive confident women who know how to be independent and love it.

“Looking for a spontaneous fun and outgoing lady to swap ideas, goals and life moments with. Looking to ignite a spark and be that ear you can confide in if the going gets a little rough.”

Chillingly, the dangerous lifelong criminal, who is now 41, added: “I’ll be waiting.”

He also described himself as single, athletic, easygoing and someone who enjoys listening to rap and R&B music. And appealing to women on the outside to reach out to him, he pleaded: “Communication is the actual conduit to staying in a healthy mind state.

“So let’s help each other out. Let’s start by getting to know each other. Never know where it will take us…”

Daniel Jacob Craven Jr

Some women love muscles and a bad boy – and perhaps that is what 6ft4 Daniel Jacob Craven Jr is banking on.

However, on his dating profile, he conveniently left out any mention of once drowning a love rival in a dog bowl after having an affair with his wife.

But in another bizarre twist, that’s not actually why he is on death row, even though he burned the body of Ronald Justice after killing him on April 6, 2011.

He wasn’t ordered to die until four years later – after repeatedly stabbing his cellmate, John H Anderson, to death with a shank on June 28, 2015.

Cocky double killer Craven Jr has posted pictures online showing him flexing his muscles. In his bio, where he outlined his expectations in a woman, he wrote: “I am hoping to find one serious friend. So far, people write for a month and fall off. I am looking for a true connection. Because of my size, affiliations and charges, I’ve been on solitary / heightened security for eight years.

“I was just released and am capable now of contact visits, photos, daily email and phone calls, plus snail mail if I must. Please ask what you want. I seek honesty and loyalty. I hope for love, I expect nothing. Thank you for your time, as I know how important it is.”

Wire of Hope

The penpal site was started by two friends who are striving to help change the lives of incarcerated people.

A statement on the website reads: “A prison correspondence helps them escape the daily monotony and darkness, feel human again, appreciated, and sometimes even loved. To sum up, by writing to an inmate, you could brighten up someone’s day, week, month, even, Actually, you could change a life.”

One of the founders is a woman called Sigrid who herself began sending letters to a killer before moving from France to live closer to the Union Correctional Institution in Florida.

The man she fell for was Alan Wade. He was sentenced to die after the robbery, kidnapping and murders of retired couple Reggie and Carol Summer who he – along with accomplices – buried alive in 2005.

She later had a baby with Alan behind bars and said in 2021: “I started writing to Death Row inmates because I was against the death penalty. I believe in second chances and rehabilitation.

“When I started to realise I was having feelings for him and him for me, we both got scared. We took a step back and we tried to stop writing to each other and we were both miserable. And after six weeks he wrote back – his first words were ‘I love you’.”

She added that her family were angry at her decision – saying they thought she was the ‘worst person ever’.

But Sigrid said Wade, whose death penalty sentence was overturned to a life sentence, was the man who makes her happy and she therefore does not see why it bothers other people.
