Moment ‘mayhem’ breaks out at pub as England followers conflict with gang

This is the moment all hell broke lose at a pub as England fans clashed with a gang outside who hurled bottles into the beer garden, with four people taken to hospital.

Dramatic video footage shows ‘mayhem’ erupting at a popular Birmingham pub’s ‘sell-out’ screening of the Euro 2024 final.

It shows bottles being hurled at the busy beer garden of The Old Crown in Digbeth near the end of England’s defeat to Spain.

Shouts and jeers filled the air as violence flared between a group outside the pub on High Street, Deritend, and those in the beer garden at around 9:30pm on Sunday, with one punter saying it ruined the ‘good vibes’.

Red smoke bombs were let off outside and plastic cups were hurled back over the brick wall into the street amid the disorder.

Two men and two women were hurt and taken to hospital by ambulance for their injuries.

The group had dispersed by the time officers arrived, with West Midlands Police now appealing for witnesses as the investigation continues.

A social media account shared the shocking video online alongside the caption: ‘POV [point of view] you went to watch the England game in peace and left in mayhem.’

One football fan who was at the pub recalled the sound of ‘glass smashing’ as men outside the pub began throwing bottles.

The witness, whose friend was among the four injured, said things ‘escalated’ as those outside began throwing more over the fence, with fans inside the pub retaliating with plastic cups.

He said: ‘We heard glass smashing and we were all looking around to see who threw it.

‘We realised it came from outside and so some guys went over to the fence to see what was going on. It all escalated and they were throwing more glass bottles over the fence.

‘Some lads from inside the pub started throwing some back but all we had were plastic cups, because the pub wasn’t serving in glass because of the football. Glass bottles were whizzing past our heads.

England fans poured out into the street following the defeat and started brawling in Hertford

It isn’t known why the England fans started brawling but many people looked on in shock

‘A mate of mine got her arm cut open and I saw a girl get hit in the chest, I don’t know what happened to her. I saw one lad commenting on social media that he had to get stitches in his eye.

‘A few of the guys who were throwing the bottles got caught as they tried to run away, I think they got beaten up.

‘That pub had such good vibes before the incident, this had nothing to do with football hooligans.’

Two ambulances were sent to the scene, with paramedics treating two men and two women for their injuries before taking all four to hospital for further treatment.

West Midlands Police urged anyone with information to get in touch. A statement from the force read: ‘We were called to High Street, Deritend, shortly before 9:30pm on Sunday to reports of a disorder.

‘Officers attended but the group involved had dispersed when they arrived. Anyone who has more information about what happened can contact us via 101 or Live Chat quoting log 3851 of 14 July.’

The Old Crown has been approached for comment.

It’s not the only pub to see violence on the night of the final. Ugly scenes also broke out on a high street in Hertford after the Three Lions were beaten 2-1 by Spain in Berlin.

Shocking footage from last night shows some Three Lions fans fighting each other in the village of Welwyn  as two brutes are seen raining down punches on another man

Video footage shows a huge group of men, who had seemingly just come out of a pub, exchanging savage blows in the middle of the road.

Other fans look on in shock and dismay as the supporters punch and kick each other on the floor.

There were also violent scenes in Benidorm following the match, with shirtless fans having a punch-up in the middle of a busy street.

One video starts with the sound of two loud smacks as a man punches two people in the face, flooring them.

Then a group of men charge into the frame, chasing after the attacker as onlookers shout in disbelief.

The men who were knocked down help each other up off the floor while people crowd around to check if they are OK.

England supporters had previously vowed to ‘take over’ Benidorm if the squad managed to bag the illustrious championship title.

But it was Spaniards dancing in the streets proudly waving their flags after the devastating loss, which echoed England’s tragic defeat four years ago against Italy.

Cars streamed through the town hooting their horns with passengers waving the Spanish flag out of the windows.

Grown men wept into each other’s shoulders, prostitutes tried to console reluctant customers in England shirts and Spanish fans offered hand-shakes to celebrate a hard-fought match.

Even in the stands in the Olympiastadion in Berlin, England fans started punching each other after the match.
