Scorching heatwave to bake UK with 31C ‘fairly probably’ as Brits refill on beer

Brits will be dusting down the BBQs and stocking up on cold beers as a 30C mini heatwave moves in.

An area of high pressure will turn the summer fortunes around, with roasting conditions by Friday.

The Met Office said 31C is “quite likely”. A yellow heat-health alert has been issued from 5pm on Thursday in London, the East Midlands, the South East and the east of England until 11pm on Saturday.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: “We’re going to be dragging in some hot air so our temperatures are set to rise.

“It does look like we’re going to get something markedly hotter.

“If we look at London, temperatures are really going to rise as we go through this week, so low 20Cs up to mid to high 20Cs, probably even low 30Cs in some places on Friday.

“So, 30, or 31C looks quite likely and then we’re likely to see temperatures dropping down a bit.”

The yellow warning means that “vulnerable groups” are likely to be affected by the weather.

But a band of rain is due to move across the UK from the west over the weekend, bringing in showers and some thunderstorms.

The country will experience cooler weather by Sunday.

And if this weekend’s scorching heat wasn’t enough, we’re also set for an Indian Summer according to one forecaster.

Exacta’s James Madden previously told us: “September looks like delivering a very mixed bag of weather this year and is far less easier to judge in comparison to our record-breaking forecast in terms of heat for September 2023.

“Periods of late summer heat and Indian summer-type weather will grace our shores at times throughout September this year, and this could still see temperatures topping out at around the mid 20s and maybe a little higher under favourable circumstances.”
