Finally caving to intense pressure to drop his re-election fight, Joe Biden ditched his run for a second term as the Democratic frontman last night. The head-of-state dropped the bombshell on Twitter/X, where he also bragged about some of his wins over the past four years.

“I know none of this could’ve been done without you, American people,” he penned in his announcement. He added: “I believe it in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down.”

Vice-president Kamala Harris has emerged as the frontrunner to be the next leader of the party and face off against Donald Trump in the US election later this year. Endorsements flooded in for onetime presidential candidate Harris, including from Biden himself, who called his vice-president “the best decision I’ve ever made”.

However, there were notable absentees from the list of endorsements including from ex-president Barack Obama, who failed to come out in support for Harris. This prompted calls from some to have an “open convention”, which invites the question – who else might go head-to-head with Trump?

Artificial intelligence has suggested we might see familiar face and previous First Lady Michelle Obama in the presidential race. “She hasn’t been a central figure in recent presidential races but has garnered attention and support within the party,” the AI told the Daily Star.

“Michelle Obama consistently ranks as one of the most admired women in America, enjoying broad appeal across various demographics,” it added. “Her eloquence and ability to connect with people on a personal level are significant assets.

“Her candidacy would undoubtedly energise the Democratic base and attract a wide range of voters.”

The AI expert also claimed Michelle Obama would stand a great chance of beating Trump if she ran.

It said: “She is seen as a unifying figure with a strong personal story and a history of advocating for issues that resonate with many Americans, such as education, health, and military families.

“Additionally, her appeal across different demographics, including independents and moderate Republicans, could make her a formidable candidate against Donald Trump.”

Other candidates it suggested were California Governor Gavin Newsom, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
