‘Weirdest place in America’ the place folks fish within the street and bar workers are AI

One US state has been dubbed the “weirdest in America” because of reports of people “fishing in the road”.

Florida – home to iconic cities Orlando, Tampa and Miami – is one of the stranger places in the world. In fact, it’s so weird it sparked the meme ‘Florida Man’, an internet sensation that referred to an alleged prevalence of blokes performing irrational or maniacal actions in the Sunshine State.

‘Florida Man’ was dubbed the “world’s worst superhero”, after countless weird-but-real headlines like “Florida man attacked during selfie with squirrel” or “Florida man in ‘No Seriously, I have Drugs’ t-shirt arrested for possession of drugs”.

Some have claimed they’ve seen Floridians fish in the street

In 2017, their reputation wasn’t helped when hundreds of gun-owning Florida men announced they planned to shoot Hurricane Irma out of the sky.

Although the Miami New Times claimed that freedom of information laws in the state makes it easier for journalists to acquire information about arrests from police, one thing is still clear – weird things happen in Florida.

On Reddit, there are several threads dedicated to how absurd the place can at times be.

“Every time I’ve been to Florida I’ve thought that it’s: America, but like it stopped trying halfway through,” wrote one user. “All the people, places just seemed like they kinda gave up in the middle and just said, “f**k it, close enough.”

Another person said: “Every time Florida gets mentioned, people are quick to bring up ‘Florida man’ style news, but nobody ever talks about how people seem to get sick of driving on the highways down there and decide to just pull over and do whatever.

“People literally go fishing in highway exit pools of water. They’ll pull over, set up the grill and have an entire cookout. They’ll sleep in the breakdown lane, do their makeup, change clothing inside the car, etc. The possibilities are endless.”

Earlier this week, an Orlando hotel saw the installation of the world’s first AI bartender called Sara. The bizarre – but quite charming – cocktail stirrer can make hundreds of different drinks, up to 120 beverages per hour.

The digital bartender can also check IDs, as well as take payment and tips, engaging customers in unsettling small talk.
