Toilet ‘chaos’ as airplane pressured into emergency touchdown resulting from overflowing bogs

A passenger flight had to make an emergency landing after staff noticed “overflowing” coming from the toilet area.

An American Airlines flight headed to Spain was forced to make a quick pit stop in New York City Wednesday, after a lavatory issue bubbled up, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Officials said the flight had only just taken off from Dallas when staff noticed the plane’s bathroom had started overflowing. Frustrated passengers touched down unexpectedly at the John F. Kennedy International Airport around 10.30pm.

American Airlines confirmed the “maintenance issue” involved the plane’s bathroom, while offering its passengers travel accommodations for the night while a new plane was readied to continue the international journey.

“On August 7, American Airlines flight 36 with service from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Madrid (MAD) diverted to New York (JFK) due to a maintenance issue,” an American Airlines spokesperson said in a statement.

“The aircraft landed normally and is scheduled to re-depart [Thursday] evening on a new aircraft. We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologise for the inconvenience.”

It comes less than a month after a global Microsoft outage forced American Airlines to ground all flights, along with several other major companies. Although this of course wasn’t the fault of the airline, there have been other instances of planes having to make a stop for disgusting reasons.

In one horrifying instance, a Delta airlines flight headed to Amsterdam was diverted to JFK when several passengers fell ill after being served spoiled food.

And last month one of American Airlines’ Boeing 737 planes was forced to abort a takeoff after one of the wheels exploded on the runway in Florida.
