Manchester United accused of cashing in on followers – charging £71 for FA Cup snap

Greedy Manchester United bosses have been accused of cashing in on fans after they announced charges of up to £35 a pop for fans looking to pose for a photo with the FA Cup.

The tightwad Old Trafford chiefs are demanding the fees despite rivals clubs letting fans see their silverware for free.

The Old Trafford club demands £36 for a stadium tour, plus £35 for four images with the cup — a total of £71.

It costs £25 for only two photos, and £15 for one.

While local rivals Manchester City allow fans on their £26 a pop stadium tours to take photos with the Premier League trophy on their mobile phones for free.

If they wish they can pay for four professional photos to be taken be taken they can for £25 but their is no obligation to do so.

The champions also take their trophies across the globe to different countries where fans can have their photos taken with them for free.

Similarly, Liverpool did not charge fans for photos with the Carabao Cup which they won it back in February.

The Anfield club arranged free photo sessions for fans to be pictured next to the trophy at various locations in the Merseyside area in March and later, abroad.

The club charges £25 for a stadium tour.

Additional photo packages with the Premier League or Champions League Trophy can be purchased in conjunction with a tour charged at £30 for four souvenir snaps plus a keyring and magnet pack.

City banked £176.2 million Premier League money last year.

United got £151.9 million for finishing eighth.

Marc Gander at the Consumer Action Group, said: “An out-of-touch boardroom which celebrates success by awarding a penalty against their own fans shows they only understand the ‘bottom line’.

“Nothing about loyalty, nothing about shame…and nothing about football either.”

Martyn James, independent consumer champion, said: “This blatant money grab from Manchester United is particularly galling.

“There are some things that fans shouldn’t have to pay for – and a photo of the contents of the trophy cabinet is one of them.

“Times are hard and fans shouldn’t be priced out of these precious moments.

United declined to give a formal comment but said they charged for photography as a “commercial product” and “fans seem happy to pay for it”.
