WhatsApp users have been warned to keep an eye out for “strange messages” appearing on the platform.
Action Fraud issued the urgent warning over scams which see fake exchanges from loved ones deployed in a bid for cash. The cyber crime body said anyone with the chat app installed on their devices should be careful, even when it comes to messages from family and friends.
Taking to X, formally Twitter, it said new attacks attempted to trick people into handing over money by pretending to be close friends or relatives in need. And pensioners have even been targeted by heartless scammers.

The tricksters often start with a message that simply says “hi mum”, according to the Express. Fraudsters then act as if they are a family member, with some saying they have lost their phone and need money to get it replaced.
The online crooks will then demand cash is sent to a bank account. Action Fraud added people should contact family members after receiving messages to make sure they are genuine.
“If a family member or friend or friend makes an unusual request on WhatsApp, always call the person outside of WhatsApp to confirm their identity,” they said.
According to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau and Action Fraud, there were 414 reports of attacks during the first five months of 2023. The body said it had costs victims including pensioners a whopping £467,208.
