Newcastle followers fume as ‘reckless’ star despatched off for ‘headbutt’ on Brereton Diaz

Newcastle United fans were left incensed on social media after seeing Fabian Schar sent off for headbutting Southampton’s Ben Brereton Diaz.

On 28 minutes, the Swiss defender got into an altercation with Brereton Diaz, who shoved the Newcastle star to the ground. Clearly incensed, Schar got up and confronted the Southampton striker.

But, in doing so, the Newcastle defender stuck his head into Brereton Diaz, which resulted in him headbutting the Saints forward. And that then saw the former hit the ground, writhing in agony.

Referee Craig Pawson had seen all he needed to see, and after a quick VAR check, Schar was headed down the tunnel at St James’ Park for an early bath.

While there could be some sympathy for Schar after Brereton Diaz’s unprovoked shove, the Swiss international should not have stuck his head into the latter’s. It was a clear red card and one Schar was correctly sent off for.

Should Newcastle United’s Fabian Schar have been sent off against Southampton? Let us know in the comments section

However, that did not stop Newcastle fans on social media voicing their frustration at the decision. One fan wrote on X: “That’s absurd! He got assaulted.” A second added: “That’s a disgraceful decision and embarrassing play acting.”

A third wrote: “That’s an atrocious decision.” A fourth commented: “First refereeing mistake of the season came early.” And a fifth said: “Horrid refereeing. Premier league is back.”

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer also weighed in on the sending off. Taking to X, he wrote: “S**thousery at its finest but so stupid from Schar.”

And with Newcastle already light at the back in terms of centre-back options, it could see them go back to Crystal Palace with a fifth bid for defender Marc Guehi. The Magpies had a fourth bid for the England international rejected earlier this week, with the fee thought to be in the region of £65million.

However, Palace rejected that offer, clearly keen to hold out for as much money as possible, which Newcastle may now have to pay with Schar set to miss potentially three games due to his sending off.
