Newmarket fireplace: Homeowners instructed to maintain their home windows and doorways shut

Hundreds of people have been told to stay indoors and keep their windows shut after a massive fire tore through a scrapyard.

Dozens of firefighters are on the scene after a large blaze broke out at a metal recycling firm near Newmarket in Suffolk on Friday evening.

Plumes of black smoke were seen rising into the sky with flames more than 10ft tall burning through scrap vehicles at Scrapco in Red Lodge.

Firefighters could be seen trying to dowse the fire with hoses from an aerial ladder and units on the ground at the scene.

Officials have told people living on a nearby housing estate to keep their windows shut and warned that the severity of the inferno means it will not be possible to stop it burning before Saturday morning.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) says it has sent eleven crews from across th county to deal with the incident, the smoke from which could be seen from miles around.

The service said it had initially been called at 5.38pm on Friday evening, with engines from Ely, Bury St Edmunds, Mildenhall, Halstead, Sudbury, Brandon, Elmswell, Ixworth and Newmarket dispatched.

At 6.30pm a spokeserson said: ‘We are currently attending a fire at Scrapco on The Carrops in Red Lodge. 

‘As a precaution we advise local residents to keep doors and windows closed.’ 

In a later update put out at 9pm, the service said: ‘With scrap continuing to burn, crews are are still on scene firefighting. 

‘They will be at the incident throughout the night and into tomorrow (Saturday). 

‘A change in wind direction means that residents of Red Lodge are advised to keep windows and doors closed.’
