Cheshire deemed Midlands in north-south debate as accent dubbed ‘bloody bizarre’

The divide between the North and South of England has long been up for debate. For years now, the two opposing sides have struggled to even come close to an agreement, but now social media users, have pinpointed a new location where they believe the Midlands lies.

Taking to Reddit, one user, @OceansOfLight, asked those living between Stone-On-Trent and Skegness if they classed themselves as Northern or Southern.

The majority of the public comments living in areas below Manchester and Rotherham on the map claimed they were neither, as reported by the Mirror.

Instead, Reddit users agreed on a wide span of the country being the official starting point of the Midlands and thus, the end of the north.

The original poster asked: “If you live in the area marked in black do you see yourself as Northern?” One user said: “Grew up basically right in the middle of this area and we considered it the Midlands/East Midlands.”

Another added: “Was gonna say Shrewsbury just clips into there which is 100% Westmids, I’m Telford and we consider ourselves very West Mids, not even like I’m the edge. I’ve always thought sort of Chester up was north, anything below is more Midlands/whatever the hell you wanna call yourself really.”

Other users rather simply replied with: “This is the Midlands.” Another suggested fellow Midlands cities mock one another depending on how close they are to the north or south.

One user joked: “I live in Norwich (definitely the south) and have a friend from Leicester (definitely the Midlands) who I poke fun at for being “Northern” even though our cities are literally the same latitude. Northern isn’t a location, it’s a lifestyle. Also, her accent is bloody weird so.”

But some find the divide a little too close to call. One user explained: “Grew up in south Cheshire, always considered ourselves to be northern. Local TV stations all suggest the north too – Granada, BBC Northwest etc.”
