Ryan Giggs has clear verdict on new Man Utd signings due to their wages

Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United have got their summer signings right as they “can’t wait to play” for the club.

The Red Devils have been busy in the transfer market, securing the double signing of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich for £42.5million and £17.1m respectively this week. The deals bring the duo back under the management of ex-Ajax boss Erik ten Hag and take United’s spending spree to nearly £150m following the arrivals of Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee.

United legend Giggs, who’s got a trophy cabinet bursting with two Champions League and 13 Premier League titles, reckons his old club have spent well. Not only does he back their abilities on the pitch, but he also believes their attitudes are bang on because of how quickly their contracts were resolved.

Speaking to Webby & O’Neill on their YouTube fan channel, Giggs was asked if he thinks they can make an impact. He replied: “I do. I think they’ve played at big clubs.

“What I like is that they look young, hungry and they look as though they want to come and play for the club. Everything that I’ve seen, these players can’t wait to play for Manchester United and see it as an honour.

“There isn’t much being made about how much they’re being paid. I think we’ve paid too much [in the past] in transfer fees and wages for players who weren’t good enough, whereas now – I don’t know if it’s Dan Ashworth or Jason Wilcox.

“But we’re getting players in who want to play for Man United. They’re not hanging about wanting more money. The transfers have been done quickly so for me that’s a clear sign that they want to come to United.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s minority takeover earlier this year has been followed by a major shake-up in the boardroom, with chief executive Omar Berrada arriving from neighbours Man City, Dan Ashworth being recruited from Newcastle as sporting director and Jason Wilcox joining Southampton as technical director – giving supporters hope for a turn in their club’s fortunes this season.
