Brits carry mind-boggling weight throughout home transfer and it takes days to get better

The typical house move day involves carrying 32 boxes, walking 9,440 steps, and lifting a total of 466kg, according to a poll.

The survey, which involved 1,000 adults who’ve relocated in the past decade, revealed that 34% find the actual moving day the most challenging due to the amount of lifting and steps taken.

On this day alone, as many as 19 flights of stairs will be climbed, five caffeine breaks will be taken, and four items will be dropped. Therefore, it’s hardly surprising that it usually takes eight days to recover from a house move.

The study was commissioned by Domino’s, which has announced it is testing a home removal service on Friday, August 30 – the busiest day for moving house in the UK. This follows the discovery that a takeaway pizza is often the first meal after relocating, with 50% choosing a hot slice.

A spokesperson for Domino’s commented: “August is the month for home movers and the effort which goes into moving house can be underestimated.”

They added, “It’s no surprise pizza has been voted the go to meal option after a day of physical activity” followed by, “We know a thing or two about deliveries, which is why we’re taking the stress out of moving.”

The poll also found that nearly four in 10 (38%) admitted they would struggle to move house if they had to do it alone. Meanwhile, 62% prefer to use a removal company, with price, professionalism, and friendly service being the top three things they look for.

A third of people, 33%, admit that their first meal after moving house is typically eaten on the floor, surrounded by boxes, according to a study conducted via OnePoll. The survey also revealed that 30% of respondents actively dread the moving process.

On average, movers will lock themselves out of their old or new place five times during the move. Additionally, up to four pieces of furniture brought from the old home will frustratingly not fit in the new one.

Those planning to move this August and fancy having Domino’s help them settle into their new home should email homemovers@dominos.co.uk by Friday 23 August.
