Sterling to Arsenal switch concern recognized as Arteta instructed ‘major downside’

Ex-Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit claims Gunners boss Mikel Arteta should not sign Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling due to his age.

Last weekend, Sterling was left out of Chelsea’s match-day squad to face Manchester City by Enzo Maresca, a decision which looks to have signalled the end of his Blues career. Despite having played a part in pre-season, the 29-year-old was nowhere to be seen at Stamford Bridge during Chelsea’s Premier League opener, which they lost 2-0 to City.

Sterling, who turns 30 in December, was also left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024, despite being a mainstay for years under the recently departed Three Lions boss. After being left out of the Chelsea squad to face City, Sterling’s representatives released a statement, claiming the winger is seeking “clarity” over his future.

With it looking an almost certainty Sterling will be playing his football this season away from Stamford Bridge, questions have been raised about just who would be interested in landing the winger who still has three years left on his deal he inked back in 2022. However, one club who should not be interested in Sterling is Arsenal, according to former Gunners star Emmanuel Petit.

Petit is adamant Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta should not sign Sterling, claiming he has not improved since his Liverpool days, reports the Mirror. “Nope, Arsenal won’t sign Raheem Sterling,” Petit told Android Poker Apps.

“Since Sterling left Liverpool, he hasn’t improved a whole lot at Manchester City and Chelsea. Sterling can have big moments but there is no consistency in his performances. He still needs to improve his final ball and needs to score more, this is the main problem.

“This is something that Mikel Arteta will not want in his team, he wants young and hungry player, Sterling won’t improve more than another young winger.”

However, with Arsenal currently lacking options behind winger Bukayo Saka, the signing of Sterling, who despite Petit’s protestations, has improved since his Liverpool days, would be an interesting one.

While the last two seasons have been poor compared to his Manchester City days, Sterling did score eight goals in the Premier League which was more than Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli last term. And with Arsenal reportedly set to sell striker Eddie Nketiah to Nottingham Forest, they would have cash to spend on a replacement – be that on a permanent deal, or on-loan.
