Gareth Southgate lands new function one month after quitting as England boss

Gareth Southgate has landed a new role after stepping down as England boss.

Southgate, 54, quit as the Three Lions boss last month after he watched his side fall to Spain in the final of Euro 2024. And the ex-England boss has wasted short time in landing a new role in football.

The 54-year-old has agreed to become part of UEFA’s technical observer committee. It’s not the first time he’s made up part of the committee – and Southgate helped contribute to UEFA’s technical report for last season’s Champions League final.

Technical observers analyse games from a coaching perspective as they try and spot new trends and tactics in the game. The individual in the role is granted access to state-of-the-art visualisation tools as well as a huge amount of data in order to help them make conclusions.

Southgate will be joined in the role by former West Ham United boss David Moyes, according to Henry Winter.

Roberto Martinez, who has worked as a UEFA technical observer in the past, told the governing body’s official website: “Instead of just watching the game for a specific reason in my capacity as a national team coach.

“You are watching it in a more holistic way and appreciating the development of the game and the competition itself.

“It could be different types of performances, from young players, for example, or the way the competition is getting tougher physically and cuter tactically with the new trends within the competition.”

A number of high profile managers took on the role at Euro 2024 including the likes of Fabio Capello, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Avram Grant, Aitor Karanka and Frank de Boer.
